Originally designed in 1969 with a length of 3.488 kilometers, it hosted its first event in 1972.
The Italian Motorcycle Grand Prix was last held at this circuit, the last time being in 1993 when the length of the circuit was increased to 4.064 kilometres.
Since 2007, it has hosted the San Marino Motorcycle Grand Prix as part of the World Speed Championship. That same year, the direction of the circuit was reversed.
The 2010 edition was marked by the death of 19-year-old pilot Shoya Tomizawa. He died in hospital from injuries he sustained in an accident during the Moto2 race.
Since 2010, the circuit has hosted the Italian Endurance Open Series championship.
Following the death of Marco Simoncelli at the Malaysian Grand Prix on October 23, 2011, the board of directors of the Misano sports complex decided unanimously on November 3, 2011 to rename the circuit after the Italian driver.
